The Word of CJSW

Guerilla Gardening In Calgary

You may want to look underfoot next time you wander through Calgary’s downtown. Non-profit groups are planting flowers and greens in some of the city’s most unlikely spots. This week, CJSW News presents a special on urban and guerilla gardening. Coverage includes video and audio from groups and individuals connected to this green movement.

This CJSW News special contains audio from two groups.

First, CJSW spoke with members and activists of the Calgary Food Policy Council. The group has organized a community garden the corner of 6th Avenue and 3rd Street SW – the heart of downtown and corporate Calgary. CJSW News reporter Steve Loo interviews 4 gardeners to discuss gardening, community building, food policies, and dreams about feeding all Calgarians.

To round-off our special, CJSW News spoke with Aviva Zimmerman, a member of the Provincial Boom Commmission. This summer, the PBC created a guerilla garden in front of the old Cecil Hotel.

I’m so glad this idea is catching on in Calgary! When you think about it there is an endless amount of space that could be utilized this way: rooftops, seniors’ yards, schoolyards, alleys, boulevards, church land, etc.

It’s just a matter of getting the word out. Great potential for feeding everyone with healthy food, grown locally, & giving “a leg up” to those who need it.
