Possible tuition increases are on many students minds this week at the University of Calgary. The Alberta provincial government is allowing post-secondary institutions in Alberta to apply for tuition increases for professional programs, despite promising a cap on tuition rates three years ago

Poverty talks is a Calgary-based grass roots initiative that is designed to provide people who are living in poverty with the supports they need to get involved in the political process. This year Poverty Talks gave an action press release on their current campaign. CJSW’s Alexis Anselmo was able to connect with Derek Cook a partner of the effort and Shannon Mckinney a student living in poverty.

Calgary Transit is under fire from local citizens as the organization plans raising general fare prices by a quarter to Two dollars and seventy five cents regular fare next year. This coming days after the city transit bus schedule cuts cutting back on nearly twenty one thousand operational vehicle hours in 2010. This fare increase for less service has many Calgarians upset.

An associate professor in the University of Carleton’s Faculty of Law, Doris Buss is also Chair of the Law Program Committee for the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF). Buss’ teaching interests include women’s human rights and international criminal law. CJSW’s Echo Fettes and Bernice Jacobs asked Professor Buss about the various challenges facing women in the twenty-first century.

David Barsamian, host of popular syndicated radio program, Alternative Radio, made a recent stop in Calgary as part of the 2009 CJSW Funding Drive.
Mr. Barsamian hosted a special CJSW Funding Drive edition of Alternative Radio on Wednesday, October 28th 2009 and spoke in front of a UofC audience on Tuesday, October 27th 2009.
