You might want to hold-off on that mortgage payment and put the kids college plans on hold. As the year 2012 gets closer and closer, doomsday predictions seem to be picking-up steam. Believers point to what they call predictions in the Mayan calendar as evidence that come December 2012, it’s the end of the world as we know it. Or is it?

Jack Woodward is a lawyer representing the Beaver Lake Cree Nation in Lac La Biche. The Beaver Lake Cree are decedents of the First Nations people who signed the original treaty in 1876, which outlined their right to hunt and fish on land they forfeited to the crown. Woodward argues that the Cree’s constitutionally protected right to hunt and fish on that land has been obstructed by tar sands development in Alberta’s North. CJSW’s Joe Burima had a chance to speak with Mr. Woodward.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

tuition-to-useAlberta’s tuition is set to potentially rise once again. Advanced Education and Technology minister Doug Horner has opened the door for institutions to apply for increases to tuition for certain programs that the schools feel were unfairly capped in 2004 during the tuition freeze. But some student groups say that Horner’s decision violates the current tuition fee calculation (annual increases tied to CPI), which is not set to expire until 2016. CJSW’s Brent Constantin speaks with Horner and University of Calgary students’ union president Charlotte Kingston about the issue.
