The Olympic Games are taking place in February in Vancouver and there are groups opposed to the games. One such group Calgary’s other olympic team was held a panel discussion at a coffee shop in Kensington. CJSW’s Steve Loo spoke with a member of the group and found out her views on why the Olympics is not good for Canada.

A team of experts from the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Social Work have developed the Homeless Asset and Risk Tool, or HART. It is a unique screening tool that determines the likelihood of homelessness for vulnerable populations.

This Is My City was a 12 month long project initiated by the City of Calgary Arts and Culture. The goal of the project was to facilitate the engagement of homeless citizens in art making. The multidisciplinary program included poetry, performance, drawing, painting, sculpture and photography. Members of the homeless community worked with artist mentors to develop their creative voices for expression, public advocacy, dialogue, and to enable homeless citizens to speak on their own behalf.

We would like to inform you of some unfortunate news from the U of C Dino’s Family. The Dino’s have suffered a great loss in the passing of the woman’s rugby head coach. An endowment has been set up for future coaches and Jenny’s sprit will live on in the team.

Facebook users in Vietnam have been experiencing a partial block of the popular social networking site. What started as a minor annoyance for some, has turned into a larger issue involving freedom of speech and expression.

Darren E. Lund is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary. He is one of over 175 Canadian academics who signed a letter protesting Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s proroguing of parliament on December 30, 2009. The letter stated that “the prime minister has violated the trust of Parliament and of the Canadian people”. Professor Lund joined us in our studios on campus.

Federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff was at the University of Calgary last week. He hosted a town-hall forum as part of his eight day tour that brought him to eleven campuses from coast-to-coast. The goal of the tour was to connect and communicate with university and college students. CJSW News covered the forum, but, like other campus media outlets throughout the tour, was denied an interview. Check-out the audio for the full story.
