Compost Garden Party!

#yyc The Compost Council of Canada is making it’s way through Alberta July 23rd to 27th. With their Compost Garden Parties they are bringing citizens together to share ideas, build support for sustainable garden practices, talk compost and have some fun. Susan Antler and Tom Lonescu talked to CJSW’s Joe Burima about the cross-Canada initiative.

July 23 – The Komagata Maru Leaves Vancouver

On July 23, 1914 a steamship filled with passengers from India, The Komagata Maru, was turned away from Canadian shores. We spoke with Dr. Hugh Johnston on the incident and its legacy.

The Bike Root on the Soapbox Derby

#uofc The Bike Root hosted a townhall meeting at the University of Calgary on Monday, July 5th, to discuss the future location of the community bike shop. The shop received a notice to vacate from Campus Planning last week. Greg Chernoff of CJSW’s Soapbox Derby talked to Robbie Williams about the Bike Root’s options.

Human rights groups call for public G20 inquiry

Many groups such as Amnesty International and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association have been demanding a probe into the police action during the G20 summit in Toronto, specifically on Saturday, June 26th during the People First March that ended with a mass arrest in Queen’s Park. CJSW’s Brad Cooke attended the march and recalls his experience.

The Bike Root gets the boot

#uofc The Bike Root is a community bike shop at the University of Calgary located in Murray Fraser Hall. Well, at least until July 30th. The Bike Root received a notice to vacate last week from U of C Campus planning .

Naheed Nenshi’s Alberta View

Calgary mayoral candidate Naheed Nenshi responds to votecalgary.ca, a website created by Calgary urban developers to inform the public and city council of their interests. Nenshi wrote about campaign finance reform and the relationship between municipal candidates and developers in the April 2010 edition of Alberta Views Magazine.

Jazz Fest refuses to refund Market Collective

Does Alberta Need a Constitution?

The Wildrose is holding their annual general meeting this weekend in Red Deer, Alberta. They will decide the party’s policy platform and discuss the possibility of creating an Alberta Constitution. CJSW’s Joe Burima talked to Wildrose Party Leader Danielle Smith about the idea.
